Credit 8- Light Pollution Reduction
SS8 deals with minimizing light trespass from your building. This credit aims to reduce development impact on nocturnal environments, reduce sky glow and improve nighttime visibility through glare reduction. SS8 should be attempted as early as possible in the design process, otherwise many projects often fail to gain the credit. The lighting designer is the contact that is responsible for leading this process.
Requirements for interior lighting include keeping the light inside the building or shutting down all non- during non-business hours. Exterior lighting must not exceed 80% of lighting power densities for exterior areas and 50% for building facades and landscape features.
Lighting designers often use computer models to find the most efficient way to minimize site lighting. Other technologies such as low-angle spotlights and full cutoff luminaries are good options to help attain SS8.
