Credit 5.2-Site Development: Maximize Open Space
SS5.2 aims to promote biodiversity by having a high ratio of open space to developmental footprint. Typical strategies are to limit hardscape and parking areas in order to allow more sufficient open space. The owner and civil engineer typically work together to help complete this credit.
If there is a local code for open restriction, open space should exceed local code by 25%. When there is no code, such as on campuses or military bases, open space should be the same size as building footprint. When there is a local code, but zero open space requirement, open space should be 20% of site area. If you double any of the available options, an exemplary performance point is also available. Cost impacts for this specific credit are usually minimal to none.
