Non Electric Exit Signs

Non electric exit signs are a cost effective and energy efficient alternative to installing and maintaining electric powered exit signs. Non electric exit signs do utilize the newest advances in safety egress technology and are great for both new and previously constructed facilities. There are two types of non electric exit signs: tritium and photoluminescent.

Tritium exit signs, also known as self-luminous exit signs, are powered by tritium isotope, a type of hydrogen gas. Self-luminous exit signs contain borosilicate glass tubes that are arranged to spell the word “EXIT.” These small tubes are internally coated with a phosphorous compound. The tritium contained within gives off electrons as it decays over time, and the electrons interact with the phosphorous compound coating on the inside of the tubes which emits photons (light). The tubes that spell out “EXIT” are protected by an impact resistant polycarbonate shield and thermoplastic housing so they are completely safe to install in all types of installations. More so, the non electric capability of tritium exit signs allow them to be placed anywhere, indoors or out. Greentorch offers two types of tritium exit signs, both of which are UL Listed and approved for use throughout North America. Our SLE series features a 125-foot viewing distance and aluminum mounting bracket. Our SLX series features a 100-foot viewing distance and slightly more compact profile.

Photoluminescent exit signs, which utilize glow-in-the-dark technology, are the most eco-friendly exit signs available today. These exit signs absorb ambient light in the surrounding atmosphere and release it by glowing when that light is removed, such as is the case during a power outage or fire. Photoluminescent exit signs, similar to tritium exit signs, are easy to install because they do not require electricity and can simply be mounted to a ceiling or wall with included hardware. The Greentorch Blade Series photoluminescent exit sign is made from 99% recycled aluminum and has a 25-year service life. Greentorch offers photoluminescent exit signs with viewing distances of 50, 75, and 100 feet. As long as there is five foot candles of light present on the face of the sign at all times when occupants are in the building photoluminescent is an environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and long-term exit sign solution.
