NYC Exit Sign
A NYC exit sign is an exit sign that is approved for use in the five boroughs contained
within New York City. The five boroughs include Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and The Bronx. New York City contains thousands of high-rise buildings with many more thousands of exit signs contained within. In an effort ensure safety and uniformity of safety egress systems throughout New York City the New York Building Department regulates and approves the specifications for all exit signs installed in within the five boroughs.
The specifications set forth by the New York Building Department mandate that the housing for exit signs must be made from metal, either steel or aluminum. The letters that read, “EXIT” on New York City approved exit signs must be the color red. Furthermore, the letters must have a height of eight inches and a width, or stroke, of one inch. Outside of New York City and Chicago, exit signs can have a height of six inches and a ¾” inch stroke while still meeting building and fire code specifications. So, New York City approved exit signs are slightly larger than most exit signs throughout the United States.
All New York City approved exit signs must be hard wired to the building’s electrical system. , such as photoluminescent and tritium, are not code compliant in New York City even if they meet the other specifications such as metal housing construction and eight-inch tall, one-inch wide letters. When installing an exit sign in New York City into a location where electricity is not available you will need to hire an electrician to run electricity to that location.
In addition to being approved by the New York Building Department, all New York City approved exit signs have been tested and comply with UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) standards.
