Credit 5.1-5.2- Regional Materials: 10% Extracted, Processed & Manufactured Regionally
MR5.1 and 5.2 encourages locally made products in order to help reduce the environmental impacts from transportation. Building materials must be extracted, harvested, recovered or manufactured within 500 miles of the site. Keep in mind that if only a portion of the material meets the requirement, only that percentage will contribute to the regional value. Materials must be permanently installed in the project as well.
Although regional materials are usually submitted in the construction phase, establishing a project goal early is the only way to successfully earn the credit. Contractors should work with subcontractors to find out preliminary calculations for all the different options.
