Luminescent Exit Signs

Luminescent exit signs describe signs with illuminated face panels that feature the word “EXIT”. Luminescent exit signs are required by building and fire codes in the United States and throughout the world. Luminescent exit signs are safety devices that help to aid the exiting of a facility during emergency situations. Fires, earthquakes, and other emergencies can knock out AC power, causing the lighting system to be nonfunctional. For this reason, electrical exit signs come with battery backup systems that keep the sign illuminated when power is lost.

The battery backup system inside electrical exit signs will last for at least 90 minutes during emergencies. All of the parts and equipment in exit signs are manufactured to meet this standard and are certified to do so by UL (Underwriters Laboratories). If electricity is not accessible where you need to install a luminescent exit sign, choose one of the two types of non-electrical exit signs. Non-electrical exit signs have internal light sources that do not require outside power.

The first type is a photoluminescent exit sign, which uses glow-in-the-dark pigment to make the word “EXIT” luminous. These signs absorb ambient light and re-emit it when dark conditions are present, such as is the case during emergencies. Photoluminescent exit signs are environmentally friendly, with a lifespan over 25 years.

The second type is a self-luminous exit sign, which harnesses the power of tritium, a naturally glowing form of hydrogen, to provide illumination. Self-luminous exit signs can be installed anywhere, outdoors or indoors. Self-luminous exit signs come in lifespans of 10, 15, or 20 years. Both types of non-electrical exit signs are easy to install and eliminate the potential cost of running conduit to installation sites.
