Fire Exit Sign
A fire exit sign most often refers to an emergency exit sign. An emergency exit sign is a sign that reads “EXIT” and is illuminated. Illuminated exit signs are placed in buildings, above doorways and throughout corridors, to guide patrons outdoors. When power is lost during a fire, earthquake, or other emergency exit signs remain illuminated while other lights might turn off. Exit signs are outfitted with powerful light sources so that they are visible from as far as 125 feet away in complete darkness. All exit signs must be tested and certified by UL (Underwriters Laboratories) to provide a minimum 90 minutes of illumination during emergency circumstances where AC power is lost. Consuming around 35 watts of power, incandescent exit signs used large amounts of electricity and required maintenance every four months because of short lamp lifespan. With the introduction of LEDs, nominal wattage has been dropped to an average of 3 watts and lifespan has been extended from four months to between 8 and 10 years.
