Exit Signs

Exit signs are required emergency lighting fixtures that feature an illuminated version of the word “EXIT”. Exit signs have been required by building and fire codes, both local and international, for more than 75 years. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) tests exit signs for reliability and quality. When deciding what type of exit sign to install consider the application and accessibility to electricity. If electricity is available, such is the case for retrofit installations, install an electrical exit sign that uses energy efficient LEDs (light emitting diodes). LEDs provide EXIT face illumination while consuming less than five watts of electricity and last for 8 to 10 years. LED exit signs are the most popular choice when replacing incandescent exit signs. LED exit signs consume 10% of the electricity used by conventional incandescent exit signs and last 400 times as long. Switching to LED exit signs is the most cost-effective choice for replacing incandescent exit signs.

The EXIT series is the most popular model of LED exit sign that Greentorch offers. Constructed from flame-resistant thermoplastic, the EXIT series is available in a white or back housing and comes configured for both single and double-faced applications. The EXIT series can be top, side, or back mounted to all types of surfaces. An internal battery provides emergency power to the unit when AC power is lost.

If electricity is not available, choose one of two types of non-electrical exit signs. Self-luminous exit signs are the most universal exit sign available today. Self-luminous exit signs produce illumination through the utilization of tritium, a glowing for of hydrogen. Tritium is encapsulated in shatterproof glass tubes arranged to spell the word “EXIT.” Self-luminous exit signs are waterproof and can be placed indoors or outdoors. Photoluminescent exit signs are non-electrical signs that use high-grade glow-in-the-dark pigment to illuminate the word “EXIT.” A minimum five-foot candles of light must be present on the face of the sign at all times. Photoluminescent exit signs last for 25 years and are popular for commercial applications where light is present while the building is occupied.
