The light bulbs that incandescent exit signs use operate around the clock and only last for an average of only 2,000 hours. There are 8,760 hours in a year so exit sign bulbs are changed out about four times per year. Exit sign light bulbs constantly use an average of 35 watts electricity and require year round maintenance. Total energy and maintenance operating costs run about $50 annually per sign. Small to medium sized commercial buildings have 50-100 exit signs. Operating costs for 100 incandescent exit signs is $5,000 a year.
