Energy and Atmosphere Prerequisite 3- Fundamental Refrigerant Management

EA Prerequisite 3 is a mandatory credit designed to reduce ozone depletion. The building must have zero use of CFC-based refrigerants in the HVAC systems. LEED projects often do not need to take any action to achieve this credit, if their existing system is free of these contaminants. If CFC-based refrigerants exist in the system, EA Prerequisite 3 requires a 5-year phase out program. The project’s mechanical engineer identifies whether or not there should be a HVAC replacement.
