Emergency LED Exit Signs

Emergency LED exit signs are used to show the path to exit a building during an emergency. These signs have been required by international, federal, state, and local building and fire codes for more than 50 years. Emergency exit signs are required to be on at all times when occupants are in the building. To maintain constant operation, an electrical circuit is designed into the buildings construction to provide dedicated power to them. Even though exit signs are only required to be on when occupants are present, they remain on 24 hours a day to insure safety and protect against accidentally being turned off.

That said, exit signs use a lot of electrical power over the course of a year. Traditional incandescent bulb exit signs use an average of 35 watts of electricity and burn out every three to four months (about 2,000 hours). This means significant energy bills and maintenance costs in medium to large facilities.

LED (light emitting diodes) exit signs have revolutionized the cost-effectiveness of emergency exit signs. LED exit signs, in contrast to incandescent exit signs, use between two and five watts of electricity to operate and last for up to ten years (about 80,000 hours). For facilities that currently have incandescent exit signs, replacing each incandescent exit sign with a LED exit sign can save about $50 in operating costs per year per sign through reduced electricity and maintenance costs.

Facilities being constructed or facilities that require exit sign installations in areas that do not currently have electrical power should consider installing non-electrical exit signs. With non-electrical exit signs, the cost of designing and implementing a dedicated emergency exit sign electrical circuit is eliminated.

There are two types of non-electrical exit signs: tritium and photoluminescent. Tritium exit signs utilize an internal chemical reaction to produce light for a service life of 10,15, or 20 years. Tritium signs are waterproof and explosion proof. Photoluminescent exit signs are the most eco-friendly signs offered and last up to 25 years. These signs use industrial grade glow-in-the-dark pigment to illuminate the word exit. They charge using ambient light and release that light when the power goes out.
