An emergency exit is an exit used during an emergency to evacuate a building. Emergency exits and the pathway towards those exits must be visually marked to guide patrons out of a building during emergency situations. These visual markings are known as emergency exit signs. Non-electrical exit signs are a cost-effective non-invasive solution that installs in minutes. Hiring an electrician to run conduit for exit signs can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars depending on the number of sings being installed. Photoluminescent exit signs use a high-grade glow-in-the-dark pigment to make the sign visible in dark environments. Photoluminescent exit signs charge by absorbing ambient light. This light is then released through illumination when ambient light is not present, such as during an emergency power outage. Self-luminous exit signs are powered by tritium, a type of hydrogen gas. Tritium is enclosed with a phosphor compound inside of shatterproof glass tubes. The tritium reacts with the phosphor compound and glows for 10, 15, or 20 years depending on the model purchased. The tubes of tritium are arranged to spell the word “EXIT”. Self-luminous exit signs are the most universal exit sign in the industry because of they do not need any outside source of power and can be placed in both indoor and outdoor locations.
