Battery Powered Exit Sign

A battery powered exit sign is an exit sign that does not require AC power. This is a common misconception as there are no battery powered exit signs. Electrical exit signs contain batteries that are for emergency operational purposes only. These batteries are part of what is known as a battery backup system. Battery backup systems are required in electrical exit signs so that the sign remains illuminated in the event AC power to the facility is lost. These batteries constantly charge while connected to AC power and then provide emergency illumination for a minimum 90 minutes as required by local, state, and federal building codes.

The solution for those looking to purchase a battery powered exit sign is to purchase a non-electrical exit sign. Non-electrical exit signs utilize two types of technology, self-luminescence and photoluminescence. The illumination for self-luminous exit signs is provided by tritium, a glowing form of hydrogen. In the case of exit signs, tritium is encapsulated in shatterproof glass tubes that are arranged to spell the word “EXIT”. An impact-resistant thermoplastic housing and durable polycarbonate face cover enclose these tubes.

Greentorch manufactures two models of self-luminous exit signs. The SLE has a 125-foot viewing distance and aluminum mounting bracket. The SLX has a 100-foot viewing distance and comes with a thermoplastic mounting bracket. The SLX has a slight smaller dimension than the SLE. Both models can be ordered for single and double-face configurations and come with face color choices of white, black, red or green. Frame color choices are white or black. Self-luminous exit signs are the most universally applicable exit sign that we manufacture. Both models can be installed indoors and outdoors, including environments where temperatures drop below 32º F.

Photoluminescent exit signs are the most eco-friendly type exit sign available today. Greentorch photoluminescent exit signs use an industrial-grade glow-in-the-dark pigment that absorbs light and then glows when a dark environment is present. Photoluminescent exit signs are ideal for commercial applications, such as offices and warehouses, where light is present on the face of the sign when the building is occupied. Five-foot candles of light must be present on the face of the sign while the building is occupied to maintain code compliance. The Greentorch Blade series is manufactured from 99% recycled aluminum and comes with face color choices of red, black, or green. We offer both 50-foot and 75-foot viewing distance models. The 75-foot version features a glowing background with choice of red or green letters. Both models are available with an optional low-profile brushed aluminum frame.
