Battery Operated Exit Signs

Battery operated exit signs do not technically exist. Battery backup systems, which are used in the majority of electrical exit signs, provide emergency operation when power to the facility is lost. These battery backup systems are made up of small batteries that constantly charge when hard wired to the electrical system. When AC power fails during an emergency, such as a fire or power outage, the battery backup system powers on so that the sign remains illuminated for patrons to find their way to the exit.LPX

Many times, people are forced to install an exit sign where AC power is not currently located. This can be the case when a fire or building inspector determines that an exit sign is need to insure proper egress during an potential emergency situation. The cost of hiring an electrician to run conduit can cost hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, especially when more than one location needs an exit sign installed.

Greentorch has numerous solutions to this common problem. We are experts in non-electrical exit sign solutions. Greentorch offers two types of non-electrical exit signs that are code compliant across North America: photoluminescent and tritium.

Photoluminescent exit signs use industrial grade glow-in-the-dark pigment to absorb ambient light and release that light when AC power is lost and the lights in the facility turn off. Photoluminescent exit signs can be easily mounted with included hardware. Five foot candles of light must be present on the sign at all times when patrons are in the facility. Photoluminescent exit signs last 25 years and are offered in multiple viewing distances, face colors, and frame colors.

If you do not have light present at all times where you need to install an exit sign you can feel comfortable installing a Greentorch self-luminous exit sign. Self-luminous exit signs utilize tritium isotope, a type of hydrogen gas, which is contained in glass tubes. The tritium interacts with a phosphor compound producing a glowing light with a service life of 10, 15 or 20 years. The glass tubes are arranged to spell the word “EXIT” and are enclosed in an impact resistant thermoplastic case with polycarbonate face shield. Greentorch self-luminous exit signs are also offered in multiple viewing distances, face colors, and frame colors.
