Battery Exit Sign

A battery exit sign is an exit sign that uses a battery to provide illumination during emergencies, also known as a battery backup system. A common misconception is that an exit sign exists which operates solely on batteries alone. There are two types of non-electrical exit signs, self-luminous and photoluminescent. Self-luminous exit signs use a form of hydrogen gas called tritium, that glows on its own for 10, 15 or 20 years when placed in glass tubes lined with a phosphor compound. These tubes are arranged to spell the word “EXIT” and enclosed in an impact-resistant thermoplastic casing. A polycarbonate face cover provides a scratch-resistant façade. Face stencils, which are colored and provide an aesthetic background, are available in colors of green, red, black, and white. The frame that surrounds the sign comes in black or white. Overall, self-luminous exit signs are the most universally applicable exit sign available, suitable for both indoor and outdoor placement, even for temperatures below 32º F.

Photoluminescent exit signs use a glow-in-the-dark pigment to spell the word “EXIT”. These signs are great for commercial applications where ambient light is present. A small amount of light, five-foot candles, must be present on the face of the exit sign when the building is occupied. This insures that the sign can charge and then glow for a minimum 90 minutes if electrical power is lost during an emergency. Photoluminescent exit signs are the most environmentally friendly exit signs, lasting for over 25 years.
